It's okay to be you, manicured lawn and all

Maybe I was just mad. Maybe I was hurt.

Perhaps it was revenge or retribution.

Whatever the reason, I was a little severe in my attack of the 'zombies'. (My husband reproved me.)

The truth is, I love you - even if you do drive a mini-van and have a manicure. Really, I do.

And I'm sorry we quarreled. Will you forgive me?

Most importantly, I want you to know IT'S OKAY TO BE YOU - designer jeans and all.

You don't have to sell all your crap.

You don't have to live in your truck.

You don't have to travel the world.

You don't have to do what I do.

You each have your OWN dream to follow, your unique song to sing.

WE do what we do, not because we're trying to prove something, or because we think it's something special, important or noble. We do it because it's what we want to do.

Looking at our life, and the options before us, we considered the house, the mortgage, the career. We considered settling down and planting roots. Really we did.

But we realized, that wasn't what we wanted. That wasn't the music we heard.

We are one of the wanders, the explorers. Like Columbus, Lewis & Clark, or Moses in the wilderness for 40 years.

But roamers aren't the only types in this world. Nor should they be.

Maybe you are a builder, a painter, a doctor, a chef...

There's as many dreams to follow as there are individuals to follow them. And that's what makes the world go 'round.

It's okay to be you, but be sure you know who YOU are.

What's your dream?

I dream of having the financial means and health to retire in 20 years so that my husband and I can have a place with a mountain view and one with an ocean view. That is what I dream of…

I am glad you still love me and my manicured lawn and 30 year mortgage. I will probably live in this same house all of my childrens’ lives and they will go to school and we will work and take our vacation once a year, but we are okay with that. This is my dream, it always has been. I am glad you are living yours and I am happy for your family! Who would have ever thought our lives would be so different?

Love both posts. Your zombie post needed to be written and read. I understand the regrets, but sometimes our most powerful writing comes from a place of emotion.

In these interactions with others we can learn so much about ourselves. I have a dear friend who has an amazing son. She has chosen paths for him that seemed crazy. We all worried for her, but knowing her as long as I have I let go of those reservations and trusted her intuition. 10 years later I’m in awe that she made the choices she did – she was inspired and even though the path was unconventional, she now has a son with genius capability primed to attend CalTech before most of his peers are even entering high school.

One of my favorite quotes: “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds. The mediocre mind is incapable of understanding the man who refuses to bow blindly to conventional prejudices and chooses instead to express his opinions courageously and honestly.” Albert Einstein

I think a big part of life is going forth boldly, following our intuition and dancing to the beat of our own drum – remembering that the rocks thrown at us are reminders that the very act of living our life is causing the rock throwers to question their life choices! If you ask me, that is a very good thing!

Not that the beat of your drum is for everyone. I sit here writing this in my HOA-managed, cookie-cutter house but oh how I’m cheering for you all as I watch your journey. I want you to have great success because that means it is possible for someone like me.

Opening minds up to possibility is an incredible journey in and of itself. If you look at history, most anyone who has done the same throughout history has had more than their fair share of rocks hurled…. so just take it as an indication you are well on your way to accomplishing something incredible!

    Have fun!

I’m so happy to have stumbled upon your zombie post when I needed it most. Our family is beginning the process of selling our house and travelling full time and the zombies are at our door! Sometimes I’m my own worst zombie! I know that there will always be tension between staying put and comfortable vs. selling up and moving onward. I alternate between weeping and excited anticipation. It’s crazy! And yet…we’ve been so “uncomfortable” in our comfortable state that this just feels like the right thing. So, thanks. And thanks too for the morning after post. I have a feeling there will be a few of those in my future as well. Maybe one day our paths will cross…thanks for hacking a trail out of the rat race for others to follow.

      Shelly,

Thanks for you comment. I’m glad it could help you in some small way. Keep moving forward, have faith, and enjoy the ride!

Perhaps we will meet somewhere someday 🙂
