During our visit to Pondicherry, where we received an elephant blessing at the local Hindu Temple, we also stopped off at nearby Auroville.
"Auroville wants to be a universal town where men and women of all countries are able to live in peace and progressive harmony above all creeds, all politics and all nationalities. The purpose of Auroville is to realise human unity."
We explored and awed at the ginormous and sacred Banyan Tree, the national tree of India. We also gazed at the Matrimandir, 'a large golden sphere rising out of the earth, symbolising the birth of a new consciousness seeking to manifest,' "the symbol of the Divine's answer to man's aspiration for perfection"

You guys visit the coolest places!!! And…that Banyan tree IS ginormous!!! (I love that word!)
What a great place to visit. I’ve always wanted to go there. I wonder how they decide on new residents. Did you get to meet any families who lived there at all? I’m sure they need their privacy considering how popular the place is.
We didn’t actually meet anyone that lived there- the had the ‘living’ part separated from where the tourists can go. But I did some research on it, and they will allow you to go and stay if you’re interested in it. They offer lots of classes, etc. It looks like a great community, I think they’re pretty open to accepting new residents, as long as they are willing to commit to the lifestyle and values.
