Despite all odds (yes, the truck broke down again), we made it to Antigua to reunite with the King family (currently living in Belize) and the Lybberts (currently in Lake Chapala, Mexico), to celebrate Semana Santa Antigua Guatemala.

We had a fabulous time. It was so incredible to see first hand the tradition of this culture. I felt so grateful to encounter it. Here's some of what we experienced:

Semana Santa Antigua Guatemala...

...is one of the most famous celebrations in Latin America. Each year, during Holy Week, the city fills with color and tradition. Visitors from around the world come to experience this unique blend of culture and religion.

The main event of Semana Santa is the procession. Large floats carrying statues of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and other religious figures are carried through the cobblestone streets. Local groups called cofradías take responsibility for carrying the floats. People in robes walk beside the floats, holding candles and incense. The scene is both peaceful and spiritual.

Another key part of the celebration is the alfombras. These carpets are made from colored sawdust, flowers, and fruit. They cover the streets, creating beautiful paths for the processions. People, young and old, work together to create the carpets. Often, they stay up all night to finish them. The designs usually show religious symbols or Bible scenes.

Semana Santa in Antigua is not just about religion. It is also a celebration of Guatemala’s culture and history. The event combines deep spiritual meaning with a strong sense of community. It’s an experience visitors will never forget. It offers a unique look at the beauty and traditions of Guatemala.

Wow, loved the video of the procession, and all of the pictures. The offering ‘carpets’ were amazing… reminds me a lot of the detail and beauty of the Rose Bowl parade floats, which are also so transient in their existence. I was glad that you were able to make it to Antigua despite your truck issues. Those pictures of Greg with the truck and on the bus are priceless! 😉 Happy belated Easter… He is Risen! Alleluia!

@TravelwitBender I definitely want to go to Antigua again for Semana Santa, but we’re going to have to see if we can find a place to stay… it’s usually pretty packed and pricey 🙂
